Sustainably Off Grid is an independent publication about living with less dependence on the grid: off-grid homes and cabins, solar and backup power, water, homesteading, gardening and the laws that apply in each US state and Canadian province.

Who writes the articles

Articles are published by the Sustainably Off Grid Editorial Team. We are a small editorial team, not a single personality, and we don’t present ourselves as homesteading experts with credentials we don’t have. Our job is to research carefully, explain clearly and point you to the official sources so you can check the details for your own situation.

The site has been online for several years. In 2026 it came under new ownership, and we are reviewing every article: correcting outdated facts, adding current figures and sources, and rewriting anything that no longer meets our standards.

How we research and update content

  • Official sources first. Laws, tax rules, water rights and building codes are checked against state, provincial and federal agencies, such as departments of ecology, tax offices, the IRS and the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Dated facts are labelled. When a figure belongs to a specific year, we say so. When it changes, we update the article.
  • Regular reviews. Articles are re-checked and refreshed on a rolling schedule. The date at the top of each post shows when it was last published or substantially updated.
  • Corrections. If you spot an error, tell us and we’ll fix it.

How the site is funded

Some articles contain affiliate links. If you buy a product through one of them, the site may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes what we recommend. Read our affiliate disclosure for details.

Important note

Our articles are general information, not legal, financial, electrical or medical advice. Rules differ between counties and change over time, so always confirm with your local authority or a licensed professional before you buy land, build or install a system.
